Blithe Spirit By Noel Coward
The wickedly spirited comedy about a successful novelist haunted by his biggest fan – the spirit of his deceased first wife. Loyola University Department of Theatre Arts and Dance presents Noel Coward’s ghostly comedy Blithe Spirit directed by C. Patrick Gendusa. While working on a novel about the occult, Charles Condomine decides to get a feel for the ‘real thing’ by inviting Madame Arcati, an eccentric medium, to hold a séance at his house. Her bumbling efforts inadvertently summon the ghost of his first wife, Elvira, who has been dead for seven years. Mayhem and hilarity follow as the plucky Elvira makes herself at home and tries her best to ensure she won’t be spending the afterlife alone! Noel Coward wrote Blithe Spirit during World War II as a way to cope. After Coward’s office and home were bombed during the Blitz on London, he decided he needed to create a play that had no war themes or patriotic propaganda. He set about to write a script that was comedic and very entertaining. He wrote Blithe Spirit in five days, and altered only two lines of dialogue by the time it was first produced.
Blithe Spirit will run in the Marquette Theatre at Loyola University, 6363 St. Charles Avenue, on November 2, 3, 8, 9, 10 @ 8:00 p.m. and November 4 @ 2:00 p.m.
