When a Jewish lawyer is assigned to defend a young skinhead accused of brutally killing an immigrant man, he must alter his preconceived notion of humanity in order to discover forgiveness. Playwright David Gow dares audiences to examine their capacity for compassion and asks, is there atonement for all crimes?
Neo–Nazi skinhead Mike Downey (Walker, reprising his award-winning role from the 2006 film version) is charged with murder, and Legal Aid has assigned Jewish lawyer Danny Dunkelman (Blumenfeld) to the case. Over the course of developing a defense, Danny is forced to examine the limits of his own liberalism and the demons underlying it. Daring audiences to examine their capacity for compassion, Cherry Docs offers an unblinking examination of hatred, the explosive effect it has on our society, and the hurdles that confront us as we try to eradicate it.
Since its 1998 premiere in Toronto, Cherry Docs has been produced across Canada, the U.S. and Europe. Also performed as a radio play, the script has been translated into Spanish, Polish, Hebrew and German; the film adaptation, called Steel Toes, starred Academy Award-nominee David Strathairn and Andrew Walker. The play’s cross-cultural resonance has made it one of the most internationally produced plays of the last decade.
Cherry Docs opens on Thursday, Sept 6 and runs through Oct 13. Tickets are $20. The Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum is located at 1419 N. Topanga Canyon Blvd., Topanga CA 90290; $20; (310) 455-3723; www.theatricum.com. Join us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/theatricum or follow us on Twitter @theatricum
