The Don Effect, an original dance theatre piece by GRP, debuted in New Orleans at the Candle Factory, June 10-13, 2010. Through dance, theatre, film, music and food, it explores the human desire to recreate the un-re-creatable: namely, choreographed dances and family recipes. Now that the curtain has closed, the ephemeral show will have a new life as an exhibit, as GRP partners with SoFAB to expand The Don Effect into an experience that also documents memory, food and dance. The guest curated exhibit features performance video and photos, pieces of the set – such as a refrigerator and stove - and documentary footage of chefs from Bacchanal Wine Bar, Cake Café and The Country Club, sharing their family food memories. Also on display are family recipes, collected from audience members during The Don Effect’s June run, and from cooks who shared their recipes on The Don Effect blog (www.thedoneffect.blogspot.com). Join us one afternoon only, as the cast of The Don Effect performs excerpts from the show to inaugurate this unique exhibit. Six ensemble members play a diverse cast of characters: an executive chef; the interim CEO of a sinking corporation; a grieving granddaughter; two dance archivists; and more. In their struggles to reconstruct originals -from famous concert dances to grandma's biscuits – each encounters the failure of written language to capture embodied experiences. But they persevere. In kitchens, in the archive, and at the table, they experiment with taste buds, muscle memory, and alchemy. They measure their own faulty memories against the recipe card and the archival footage, all in a passionate attempt to distinguish nostalgia from fantasy, memory from desire, and failure from invention.

Also on display are family recipes, collected from audience members during the June Don Effect June run, and from cooks who shared their recipes in response to the performance.
