Set in 1974 in Hazlehurst, Mississippi, “five years after Hurricane Camille,” the story unfolds in the rambling, old kitchen where the Magrath sisters, Lenny, Meg and Babe, grew up. The eldest, Lenny, is the family caregiver and unh appily turning 30 with no marital prospects; the middle sister, Meg is self-absorbed and rudderless at 27, with her musical aspirations unrealized; and the youngest, Babe is facing dire consequences at 24, having just been released on bail for shooting her husband in the stomach the night before, because she “didn’t like his looks.”
