The Imaginary Invalid is comedy with all the mischief and sarcasm of Saturday Night Live as it celebrates our human resilience and our ability to manipulate our way out of self-imposed predicaments. Wealthy Argan, a hypochondriac of epic proportions, uses his imaginary illnesses to gain constant attention and sympathy. His obsession makes him a perfect target for the medical quacks of his day and for his money-grabbing second wife who hopes to see his demise as a result of his doctor’s questionable cures so that she may inherit his fortune. Argan’s saucy maid and his brother hope to bring Argan to his senses by carrying his obsession to its absurd extreme.
The lively, talented cast of Nicholls students portrays the comic types from the Commedia Dell-arte, the professional, improvisational comedy of sixteenth century Italy, including the young lovers, old men, and wise, pert housemaid. Choreography by Angela Hammerli is creatively intermingled with the artistic directing of Dr. Stanley Coleman, Director of the Nicholls Players and Community Arts Liaison for Nicholls State University. The elaborate set by Walter Brown and elegant costumes will transport the audience to the pomp, pretension and affectations of Moliere’s 17th century France and the society he has such fun with. The play, a delightful spoof spiced up with occasional musical interludes, is sure to please audiences of all ages.
Tickets can be purchased at the office of the Department of Mass Communication at Nicholls State University, located in Talbot Hall 102 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
