Alice Grey returns from India and must try to win over the love of her children who she left for 5 years to grow and care for themselves (she and her husband were fulfilling his military obligations). In a turn-of-the-table Alice learns to be tutored, guided and cajoled by her offspring to become an “Alice-sit-by-the-fire” – comforted, coddled and protected against the insidious advances of old age.
