Charley Clinkenbeard is an Atlanta native and graduated from Morrow High School in 1991. He attended the University of Kentucky and transferred to Centre College, where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1996. He received his Master of Arts degree from the University of New Orleans in 1999. Charley studied Philip Elkins and Vince DiMartino.
While in New Orleans, Charley worked with society bands, performance groups, and local artists, including Kermit Ruffins, Ellis Marsalis, Jason Marsalis, the Louisiana Philharmonic, the Clarence Gatemouth Brown Big Band, Ritmo Caribeno, Al Martino, Johnny Vidacovich, Jimmy Maxwell and others. He has performed at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, the Orpheum Theatre, the House of Blues, and various French Quarter venues.
After moving to New York in 1999, Charley played several musicals which include “Sweet Charity” (with Wagner College on Staten Island) and toured with the “Magic of Musicals” in Greece. He also played trumpet with the rock/rap group, “Onetime,” who regularly played at NY clubs Session 73, Bliss, the Elbow Room, and Joe’s Pub.
In 2001, Charley returned to his hometown, where he has played lead trumpet with several local big bands, including the Atlanta Jazz Orchestra and Night Train. He currently teaches music and art at an elementary school in Stockbridge, Georgia and is pursuing art and music related projects.
