Jour de Gloire is a line from the French national anthem, La Marseillaise: “Allons enfants de la Patrie/Le Jour de Gloire est arrive!” ("Come on children of the fatherland/The Day of Glory is here!") No one took that line more seriously in French history, perhaps world history, than Napoleon. His seduction of history consumed his entire life so much so that he overlooked the great wake of change, inspiringly positive and devastatingly negative, which he caused across Europe and the world.
In MIKKO MACCHIONE's lyrical play Jour De Gloire, history is embodied by the lovely Muse of History, Clio. For five chapters Clio and Napoleon dance, literally and figuratively, through his high-minded ideas and low-handed hijinks, until the mortal Bonaparte proves himself worthy of History’s eternal fame...at the cost of everything else in his life.
Because it swings deftly from laugh-out-loud humor to heart-twinging pathos, Jour De Gloire was nominated for Big Easy, Stohrer Boone, and Ambi awards for Best Original Play. It enjoyed two runs in New Orleans, first at the sadly missed True Brew, then as part of the Tennessee Williams Festival. Jour De Gloire has also played to full houses in the art colony of San Miguel de Allende Mexico, where it returns annually to eager audiences, including Sandra Gulland, author of the best-selling biography of Josephine Bonaparte. Next year, a French-language version of the show will appear in Paris as a part of a Napoleon bicentennial.
