Greg and Kate have moved to Manhattan after twenty-two years of child raising in the suburbs. Greg is disillusioned with middle age and late-20th-century Capitalism. Suddenly he's out there making eye contact with the homeless, like the abandoned Sylvia, a street-smart mixture of Lab and Poodle, whom he brings home to his apartment. She is ''pert and sexy,'' the stage directions read, ''with a small name tag in the shape of a heart'' hanging around her neck. She offers Greg an escape from the frustrations of his job and the unknowns of middle age. Sylvia becomes a major bone of contention between the couple. The marriage is put in serious jeopardy until, after a series of hilarious complications, Greg and Kate learn to compromise, and Sylvia becomes a valued part of their lives. Sylvia... a hysterical comedy for anyone who's ever owned a dog, loved a dog, or wanted to wring a dog's neck!
"I can only call it one of the most involving, beautiful, funny, touching and profound plays I have ever seen" – The New York Daily News
"Gurney’s mad comedy is the most endearing good time to trot down the pike in many a moon. Howlingly funny…" - Backstage
