Spoiled society girl Melanie Daniels may have survived The Birds, but can she conquer The Gulls?! Forty-two years after Hitchcock’s horrific tale of nature run amok, Running With Scissors asks, “Could it happen here?” in Ryan Landry’s hilarious high-camp, low-tech parody, The Gulls, running March 25 – April 17 at One Eyed Jacks, 615 Toulouse Street.
The heroine of our story is Melanie Daniels (Flynn De Marco), an uppity Uptowner who gets her kicks pulverizing poultry, until a run-in with the mysterious Mitch Brenner (Nathan Martin) makes her all a-flutter. Hot on Mitch’s trail, plucky Melanie ventures to the far-off French Quarter, under the guise of bringing a birthday present to Mitch’s 11-year-old sister, Kathy (Dorian Rush). Half-heartedly helped in her amorous pursuits by Mitch’s bitter former fling, schoolteacher Annie Hayward (Brian Peterson), Melanie soon discovers she’s no match for Mitch’s malicious mother, Lydia (Jim Jeske), or for the preposterous, presumptuous, chicken-choking chief of police, Oscar Meyer (Jack Long). As two oversized gulls-gone-wild (Rod Lemaire and Pandora) lead a flock of fine feathered fiends in attacks on the Quarter, Melanie’s world unravels, proving that the fowl don’t always play fair.
