Written late in the playwright’s life (1983), this little known one-act on the displacement of the human soul has two characters: a gay writer travelling alone, with only his manuscripts for company, and the sexually confused travelling companion he has picked up in a San Francisco gay bar. Familiarity with Williams’ work would almost declare this play autobiographical. This play examines one of Williams' majors concerns as a writer- What are the things we take from the lives of others to make it through our own? Without that need of others, we do not exist.

DRAMA! produced the southern premier of The Travelling Companion in 2001 in New Orleans and has subsequently produced the play for the 2002 Tennessee Williams/ New Orleans Literary Festival and the 2002 Columbus [Ohio] National Gay and Lesbian Theatre Festival
