PROJECT 1VOICE producing out of New York City in association with American Theatre Project, Dillard University Theatre and twenty-eight theatres across America will engage in a national day of celebration by producing staged readings of the play THE AMEN CORNER highlighting the efforts of institutions and organizations like Dillard University Theatre while honoring playwright James Baldwin on Monday, June 18, 2012 at 7:00 p.m. The New Orleans production will be presented at the Georges Auditorium, 2601 Gentilly Boulevard, New Orleans, Louisiana. The auditorium is located next to the Samuel DuBois Cook Performing Arts Center on the Dillard University campus.
THE AMEN CORNER stars Sherri Marina (Sex and the City, "Cloud Nine" and "Jar The Floor"), actor and former chair of the Dillard University Department of Theater, Nicoye Banks, ("The Changing Game, "Green Zone" and "Brooklyn's Finest"); Lloyd Watts, (Mother Courage, "59 seconds" and Treme) Venita Matthews, Donna King, Rhonda Johnson Dents and Linda Merritt from the Anthony Bean Theatre Company production of "The Amen Corner", Rick Jay seen recently with the Chakula cha Jua Theatre Company, also featuring Jarrell Hamilton, Stephanie Chavis, Brittney M. James and Elizabeth Erin. The staged reading is directed by Ed Bishop of American Theatre Project.
Dillard University, less than 15 minutes from the CBD by auto, in one of New Orleans' historic and most beautiful neighborhoods, Gentilly; is an awesome bicycle ride via Elysian Fields Avenue or Esplanade Avenue via Broad Street. Distance from the Treme and Marigny/Bywater area is approximately 2 miles.
