Happy Birthday, Wanda June is a piece that examines the changing of idealism in America during the Vietnam War, and questions the role violence plays in American heroism while simultaneously illustrating the futility of blind pacifism. There is a great similarity between that time period and today, in which once again soldiers are returning home from a war of questionable ideals to a society that both praises and condemns their morals and actions. As with many great literary works, Wanda June provides no clear solutions, but hopefully inspires an audience to reevaluate its role in society, and its society’s role in the larger world.
Big game hunter Harold Ryan returns home after having been presumed dead for several years. He finds his wife, Penelope, being persued by a vacuum cleaner salesman and a peacenik doctor. It happens to be his birthday, an event which all those present had decided to celebrate. The cake, puchased on the spur of the moment, had been intended for someone named Wanda June, who apparently never got to celebrate at all. Ryan turns out to be a wild champion of havoc, alienating friends and demolishing violins.
