Writer, composer, and lyricist William Finn first created his musical protagonist Marvin in 1978 in "In Trousers." His next two shows focusing on Marvin and his family, "March of the Falsettos" and "Falsettoland" became the Broadway hit "Falsettos". Marvin (Jimmy Murphy) is the father of Jason (Brian Bell), ex-husband to Trina (Chris Lusk), and patient to Dr. Mendel (Kristopher Kael). He's also lover to Whizzer (Vatican Lokey). As Trina and Jason recover from the divorce, Marvin continues his sessions with Mendel where he complains about Whizzer and extolls the virtues of Trina. Mendel begins to see Trina as a patient just as Jason begins to retreat. Meanwhile, Marvin begins to take his frustrations out on Whizzer. Mendel announces his love for Trina and wants to build a new family with her and Jason. This is the ultimate loss and brings Marvin to the point of striking Trina. Whizzer leaves Marvin, and all he can do is apologize to Jason. The second act begins in 1980 with the focus on Jason's bar mitzvah. Trina and Mendel have settled in to their marriage, leaving Trina free to fixate on Jason. Marvin, still alone also fixates on the bar mitzvah which leads them back to arguing just like when they were married. Mendel tries to play it all down, but cannot compete with Marvin's next-door neighbors Dr. Charlotte (Jennifer Richardson) and her partner (and caterer) Cordelia (Amy Alvarez) At Jason's baseball game, Whizzer suddenly appears and despite their better judgement he and Marvin get back together. Jason is still struggling with his bar mitzvah until Whizzer suddenly falls ill with what will be called AIDS. When everyone's focus is suddenly shifted to Whizzer, their sense of family comes alive and bonds them together.
