FORUM FOR EQUALITY TO PRESENT ENCORE READING OF “MY BABY’S DADDIES” Performance Benefits Forum for Equality (New Orleans, La.) – June 4, 2009 – The successful Le Chat Noir staged reading of the screenplay “My Baby’s Daddies” will return Thursday, June 25 at 7:30 p.m. as a benefit performance for the Forum for Equality.
The screenplay is a comedy about a gay couple who encounter legal and social resistance as they attempt to adopt a baby girl. It premiered on May 11 at Le Chat to a sold out house and received outstanding audience reviews.
The author, Steve Majors, said he was pleased to present an encore of the reading to honor the efforts of the Forum to fight legislation that would further restrict the rights of gays and lesbians to adopt in Louisiana.
“Every child deserves a loving family and today families come in many different configurations,” said Majors. “And that is the true message of this story. I’m so proud that the Forum has taken a stand to protecting the rights of children to find a loving home in our state.”
The Forum on Equality has recently worked to oppose legislation ordering Louisiana birth certificates to recognize only those who are allowed to adopt in the state. House Bill 60 would deny fully completed birth certificates to unmarried couples; including the fathers of a Shreveport-born toddler who are currently suing Louisiana to revise their son’s birth certificate following his formal adoption in New York state. HB 60 will soon be voted on by the Senate.
In August, the Forum will also make a formal presentation on gay families to Governor Bobby Jindal’s Louisiana Commission on Marriage and Family. The Commission has been tasked with making policy recommendations on strengthening traditional families in Louisiana. Some fear the Commission might push for legislation or policies that would effectively ban gays and lesbians from adopting.
Admission is $5.00 and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Forum and its work in Louisiana toward achieving equality for all. Thursday, June 25 at 7:30 p.m. Le Chat Noir
