George and Charlotte Hay are fading stars of the 1950s stuck performing in the Siberia of show biz, Buffalo, N.Y. Miserable, and on the brink of a disastrous split-up, the couple receives word that they might have one last shot at stardom: Famed movie director Frank Capra is coming to town to see their matinee. If he likes what he sees, it just might revive their faded careers. Unfortunately for George and Charlotte, their return to stardom is littered with obstacles: a difficult daughter who’s engaged to a TV weatherman but can’t keep her hands off a theatre stagehand; an attractive ingénue who’s carrying George’s bun in her oven; an addled, vindictive mother-in-law who’s carrying a death-wish for George; and a smarmy lawyer on the prowl for Charlotte, all awash in a sea of alcohol. If that’s not enough, there seems to be a little confusion about just which play they’re putting on for Capra that afternoon: “Private Lives” or “Cyrano De Bergerac.”
