LOCAL WRITER GIVES BIRTH TO “MY BABY’S DADDIES” LE CHAT NOIR TO HOST SCREENPLAY READING IN MAY
The original screenplay, “My Baby’s Daddies” will come to life in May during a live stage reading at Le Chat Noir, New Orleans most intimate night spot and the premier venue for musical theatre, comedy, satire and cabaret shows. Le Chat Noir announced the “screenplay on stage” will be held May 11 at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.
The reading is part of the Crosstown Reading Series, a collaborative effort by Le Chat Noir and local theatre groups to encourage original writing and new plays in New Orleans.
“My Baby’s Daddies” is a comedy that follows a sharp-tongued Manhattan lawyer and his mensch-of-a-schoolteacher partner as they head to bible-belt Mississippi to fulfill their dream of becoming gay dads.
The author of “My Baby’s Daddies” is Steve Majors, a post-Katrina transplant to New Orleans. Majors said the comedy is loosely based on his own experiences.
“My partner and I have a three-year old and four-year old,” said Majors. “We’ve been mistaken for brothers, divorced dads and social workers. People either can’t imagine we’re gay dads or don’t want to believe it.”
Majors began the screenplay several years ago, but revisited the script recently when he heard speculation that Louisiana might join Arkansas in banning gays from adopting.
“They say if you can make people laugh, you can open their hearts, “said Majors. “If this ever hits the big screen, perhaps it might make a difference.”
The screenplay reading is being used to workshop the final script and generate fundraising for the film.
Noted New Orleans stage actor Patrick Gendusa will play a leading role in the reading. Gendusa signed on to the project after Majors spotted a recent profile of the actor in the Times-Picayune. The profile detailed Gendusa’s return to the stage and classroom after he survived a gay-bash attack in the Marigny.
“I don’t believe in coincidences,” said Gendusa. "I have received so many wonderful and heartfelt responses from people after learning my story. I’m thrilled to tackle any subject that promotes love and tolerance.”
