SICK is an uproarious look at a family of germ-o-phobes who have severe allergies to everything from Cheez-Whiz and cleaning supplies to city air. As prisoners inside their vacuum-sealed home and garbed in non-allergic clothing they live each day in terror that a stray mold spore or chemical will sneak in. When Dad brings home one of his graduate students, the family’s fear crescendos -- with chaotic, comedic consequences.
The National New Play Network (NNPN) selected SICK to participate in the CONTINUED LIFE OF NEW PLAYS FUND. Featured during NNPN's 2007 NATIONAL SHOWCASE OF NEW PLAYS, the play will have three successive “rolling” openings; Kitchen Dog Theater in Dallas and then New Jersey Rep, culminating with Southern Rep’s production.
The playwright Zayd Dohrn is a Lila Acheson Wallace Playwriting Fellow at Juilliard. In addition to Southern Rep, his plays have been produced and developed at The Public Theater, Woolly Mammoth, Marin Theatre Co, South Coast Rep, The Alliance, Kitchen Dog, Magic Theatre, Berkshire Theatre Festival, American Theater Company, Boston Playwrights’ Theatre, New Jersey Rep, and Alchemy Theatre of Manhattan. He is a recipient of Lincoln Center’s Lecomte du Nouy Prize, the Sky Cooper Prize, the Jean Kennedy Smith Award, an IRNE for Best New Play, and residencies with Ars Nova, Chautauqua, and the Royal Court Theatre of London.
Southern Rep is the region's premiere professional theatre, celebrating its 22nd season of world and regional premieres. For tickets or more information go to www.southernrep.com or call 522.6545.
