This stellar performance was written and directed by its star, the playwright/producer, Talitha V. Coverson as "Black Girl." In this role, she serves as a vehicle for many stories about the trials and triumphs of womanhood. It offers the audience insight on the common denominator that makes us all human: “we just want to be heard.” This platform allows the countless, voiceless women of past and present to be vocalized.
In her performance, "Black Girl", becomes no less than eight different characters all expressing tales of liberation, motherhood, sisterhood, and love, as those are the four main underlying themes of each production. Those who have witnessed this transition have described it as "breathtaking and captivating", "hilarious, witty, and painful all at the same time", and "thought-provoking." Though the show has been produced in its entirety multiple times, the show has never been completely duplicated and it incorporates the local artists and community in each production. Each audience receives an experience that is unique to them. In addition, Coverson will be offering a workshop for New Orleans youth and artists entitled.
Since its first production in November 2005, Black Girl Speaks: a one-woman show has spawned a national movement of empowerment and healing, and New Orleans should definitely be involved! We have enclosed information about the show, its creator and sponsorship opportunities. We are sure we can count on your support. We are asking that all sponsorships and donations to be confirmed by May 20, 2007. The show will be held May 29, 2007.
