In an apartment-for-rent in New York City, four self-centered individuals converge: Efficient receptionist Audrey; her manipulative beau Bruno, employed as a model at the agency where Audrey works the desk; Audrey's long-estranged mother Ingrid, returned to her daughter's life at Bruno's request, to help out with the rent; and Bruno's longtime roomie Nissim, a hysterical romantic prone to fainting, who's determined to derail the couple's pending marriage because of his passion for Bruno.
When Audrey abruptly reveals she's months pregnant, the quartet set up an uneasy household...each of them sure, absolutely sure, that the newborn will prove to be her or his redemption. The baby is due right around Christmas. The cast of Christmas on Mars includes Four Humours troupe members KATHRYN TALBOT and WARREN USEY, with JESSICA DAIGLE and CHRIS WEAVER. Its director is MICHAEL MARTIN, reprising a show for the first time in his career: He first directed Christmas on Mars a decade ago, in Chicago, and is happy to revisit one of his favorite American absurdists in his new home city. "Kondoleon is never sentimental," Martin believes. "He's clear-eyed about human relationships in a way American absurdist playwrights rarely are, and he never goofs just for the sake of goofing." If you think of the better episodes of television's "Six Feet Under," you have the tone of Kondoleon...only much more erudite and poetic. WHAT: Christmas on Mars, absurdist comedy. WHO: Written by Harry Kondoleon. Directed by Michael Martin. With Jessica Daigle, Kathryn Talbot, Warren Usey and Chris Weaver. Produced by Four Humous. WHEN: Saturdays 9pm, Sundays 7pm, December 13-21. Then Saturday & Sunday December 27-28, both 7pm. Pay-what-you-can industry night, Tuesday December 16, 7pm. WHERE: The Voodoo Mystere Lounge, 718 North Rampart at Orleans. HOW: $12. 504.304.1568.
