Over 100 people will be eaten alive in the month of October at The Plaza Theatre on Bumby Avenue!
Looking for a “terror-ific” event for the upcoming Halloween season: Little Shop Of Horrors opens Thursday October 2 and runs for four weeks. The Plaza’s newest production in a partnership with Gramercy Theatre, will feature a 10 foot tall flesh and blood eating plant that will eat 4 actors alive at each show!
Director Dan Roche envisions a production where the entire theatre becomes the setting of Skid Row. “Little Shop is a satire of many things – sci-fi, “B” movies, even the Faust legend – it is funny and moving and I think it has a great moral to it. However, much of the fun is derived out of the audience feeling like there is a bit of danger really close at hand so we are going to try to create that sense”. Set Designer Jeff Schultz is “defacing” the entire small theatre at the Plaza to become Skid Row, complete with dimly lit alleys, elevated train posts and pipes that seem to drip some kind of liquid. The flesh and blood eating plant creatures are being created by Paul McAvene of McAvene Designs in Hollywood. McAvene creates many creatures for stage, film and TV and is creating four versions of the plant for the play, spanning it’s different stages of growth. With the intimacy of the Plaza’s smaller venue and the largeness of the plant, Dan Roche promises a “very entertaining night of theatre, yet not without a scream or two! You don’t need to wait in long Halloween Horror Nights lines – just sit back and enjoy a terrific show in a scary but fun space!”
Joining the mostly Orlando based cast is Los Angeles actress Michelle Allsopp who will portray the lead role of Audrey. Allsopp is a favorite theatre actress in Hollywood where she has worked with distinguished directors such as Diane Venora, Linda Kearns and Kristin Linklater. She has also appeared on many TV shows such as “Port Charles” on ABC. The cast features many Orlando favorites. Steven Lane plays Seymour, the hero-nerd of the story. Ron Schneider plays Mushnik, the flower shop owner. The trio of hip Street Urchins are played by Tymisha Harris, Colecta Johnson and Shonda L. Thurman. Also in the cast are Valensky Sylvain, Troy Jackson, Alex Ferguson, Rita Kay and Scott Silson. The show is choreographed by Jeffrey Page, who comes from his work as one of the choreographers of Cirque de Soliel’s “O” in Las Vegas. Page has also choreographed Will Smith, Jada Pinkette and Beyonce, and his work will add to the fun “hip-ness” of the musical.
The show is considered appropriate for families, though may be too intense for children age 5 and under. It opens October 2 and runs through October 26. Tickets to Little Shop of Horrors are currently on sale. Ticket prices are $38 for general admission and $33 for seniors and students. Group rates are also available for group of 10 or more and will be $33 each. You are also able to purchase tickets to the opening night Gala on October 3, 2008.
