FOUR HUMOURS announces our newest offbeat show in another offbeat space: Out Comes Butch at Voodoo Lounge, on the very edge of the French Quarter, 718 N Rampart at Orleans. A comedic tour de force, Out Comes Butch is a one-man-show that explores the outer limits of self-awareness and self-(re)creation. Out Comes Butch is a simple story about a redneck launched on a hilarious journey of self-discovery after his neglected wife leaves him. Determined to become the man he wants to be...sensitive, caring, healthy...Butch moves by inevitable stages through one identity after another: first as a with-it New Age swinger, then as a newly gay man, then a transvestite, then transsexual...and beyond. Butch is certain that each stage is his ultimate destination, his "real self." FOUR HUMOURS is thrilled to showcase one of its most talented new members: playwright, director, and actor, Frederick Mead. Experienced in the demands of the one-man show (e.g. The Kung Fu Evangelist) Frederick has the vocal and comedic chops to inhabit each of Butch's personae. And Frederick is anxious to tackle the challenges of audience interaction in the intimate space at the Voodoo Lounge. Directed by Michael Martin, who was last seen with Frederick in Agnes de Garron's production of Mona Rogers in Person. Butch's elaborate, identity-shifting costumes (practically a co-star) are designed by Big Easy Award nominated Veronica Russell, costumer for the LA Living History Project. The production manager is Jennifer Growden, also of FOUR HUMOURS. Out Comes Butch Written by David Schein Directed by Michael Martin Starring Frederick Mead Co-starring Costumes by Veronica Russell Produced by FOUR HUMOURS Running time, approx 50 minutes. Playwright bio follows. David Schein wrote, produced and composed (with Candace Natvig) the award-winning “TOKENS: A Play on the Plague.” He was the contributing writer to “Whoopi Goldberg on Broadway.” Schein collaborated with Guillermo Gomez-Peña on NPR’s program “Border X Frontera,” was the artistic and executive director of Chicago’s Free Street Programs, and is the founding director of the Awassa Children’s Project and the One Love HIV/AIDS Awareness Theater in Ethiopia. He wrote and performed his first solo piece “Chismo” in 1973 and since then has soloed with “Life is Not A Country Western Song,” “Trucking in One Place,” “Out Comes Butch,” “My Murder and Other Local News,” and “MYethiOPIA.” He presently directs the Arts Council for Chautauqua County and the Reg Lenna Civic Center, a 1,250 seat theater in Jamestown, NY.
