(Palo Alto, CA) Seven people in one New York City apartment can make for crowded living. But for Helen and Ruth (a lesbian couple) who, along with their gay friend Peter, are expecting their first child it’s not so bad. After all, three of their housemates are their imaginary children. But just to play it safe, the trio of adults decides it would be best to “get rid” of the make-believe kids. Such is the set-up for Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paula Vogel’s And Baby Makes Seven showing at the Dragon Theatre at 535 Alma Street, Palo Alto. After two previews (beginning March 13, 2008), the show opens Saturday, March 15 and runs through April 6, Thursdays – Saturdays at 8pm and Sundays at 2pm.

In 1984, Vogel presented the world-premiere of this deliciously black comedy that reflected the ever-changing definition of family. What would it look like if two lesbians and a gay man had a baby? What if the family already has three imaginary children? And what if the actresses playing the couple also played the fantasy children? The New York Times said was the result was “…dripping in whimsy and hemlock”.

Director Rebecca Longworth (San Francisco) says “I'm excited to be working on a piece with such a big heart and sense of fun. It's wickedly funny without being wicked and sexy without being dirty. It's also a great look at a queer family without all the emphasis on the fact of its “queerness”. It’s hard to find any other play that was written in the last twenty years that has done that and done it so well.”

Starring in the show are Katie Anderson (San Francisco), Matthew Lowe (San Francisco resident and theatre Q alumnus from 2007’s Torch Song Trilogy) and Annamarie MacLeoad (San Jose).

Vogel is best known for her 1997 Pulitzer Prize-winning How I Learned To Drive. The Baltimore Waltz won 1992’s Obie award for Best Play and was recently presented at The Pear Ave Theatre. In January of 2008, Vogel was named the chair of the playwriting department at Yale.

And Baby Makes Seven continues theatre Q’s fourth season, its first as artists-in-residence at Dragon Theatre. The third show in the season, Gross Indecency by Moises Kaufman and directed by George Quick, starts May 29 followed by the world-premiere musical review, My Strange Nation, The Music of Susan Werner, which starts August 14. theatre Q's mission is to present the evolving images of gays and lesbians on stage. This is the company's twelfth production since 2004. Past shows have included the award-winning Things You Shouldn't Say Past Midnight, Cloud 9, Snakebit and Keep the Yuletide Gay.
