Jim was very active in the Crew Club at LePetit Theatre in New Orleans in the late '60's to the mid '70's. He was involved in design and operation of lighting, sound and special effects. He and his wife, Mary Beth Shambra Maumus worked many productions together. The Board of Governors of the Theatre gifted Jim and Mary Beth with the use of the Theatre building for their wedding reception in recognition of their efforts at the Theatre. Jim and his two buddies, Sid Valadie and Jim Wilks could be found in the Theatre building at all hours of the day and night. They rewired the sound system and added new equipment to the sound booth. They worked tirelessly under the supervision of Mary Ellis and Beth Hudson setting up lights and special effects.
Jim also worked for W.H.B. Spangenberg Studios, Inc. in New Orleans. Spangenberg Studios was the premiere production house for most of the major Carnival Balls. Jim's father, Cecil Maumus, was Production Manager and Show Manager for Spangenberg's for over 20 years.
Jim was President of the Drama Club of Cor Jesu High School (now Brother Martin High School) in New Orleans. His four sons followed in his footsteps, all being involved in drama at Brother Martin and also all four sons served as President of the Brother Martin Drama Club.
Jim was one of the founders of an organization called "City Lights, Inc." In the early '70's City Lights was responsible for placing the Saenger Theater on Canal Street on the National Register of Historic Places, thus saving that beautiful atmospheric theater from the wrecking ball. City Lights was also instrumental in saving the Orphium Theater in New Orleans, as well.
Jim and his wife now reside in Kennesaw, GA. He is a retired Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) and his wife is a retired teacher and journalist. They both occupy their time with various projects at their church where Jim is Communications Director and Mary Beth is Editor-in-Chief of the Parish Newsletter.
