Catherine María Rodríguez is a professional freelance dramaturg with specific interests and skill in new play development and Latina/o theatre. A New Orleans native whose paternal family hails from Nicaragua and a graduate of Carnegie Mellon with degrees in Dramaturgy and Hispanic Studies, Catherine has dedicated her life to theatrically recovering and disseminating the stories of underrepresented communities. She has worked with National New Play Network core member Borderlands Theater as a freelance dramaturg and audience development consultant. She is currently contracted to dramaturg a production by storefront theatre company The NOLA Project. Past dramaturgical credits include assisting the National New Play Network rolling world premiere of Guapa by Caridad Svich (Borderlands Theater, Miracle Theatre, and Phoenix Theatre); devised work in adapting Les Enfants Terribles by Jean Cocteau, for which she received the 2013 LMDA and Kennedy Center Regional Student Dramaturgy Award; developmental dramaturgy for historical memory play Left Luggage; and translation work for Hiawatha Project’s new work Camino, the story of an undocumented immigrant, as well as Barbarous Nights, an original adaptation of the poems and playlets of Federico García Lorca.
Catherine is skilled in new play development, script analysis, research, program note and rehearsal packet writing, translation, and fostering/leading constructive communication.
Other notable credits include administrative and producing work at Steppenwolf Theatre under Jacob Padrón; research in the field of performance studies at Northwestern University under the mentorship of Ramón H. Rivera-Servera; and performance art through collaborating on a bilingual, interactive video-based installation piece documenting Latina/o conversations on refugee status.
